City Gate, at the head of Republic Street, where the bridge crosses the ditch. It is the one point in Valletta everybody can find, and every bus on the island ends up outside it.
Valletta is a grid laid over a ridge. The streets running the length of the peninsula are level and this walk uses them for most of its distance; the ones crossing it drop away in long flights of shallow limestone steps, worn smooth and slippery in the wet. The last stretch down to the Siege Bell loses the height the rest of the walk avoided.
Not step-free, and we would rather say so than promise otherwise. The central spine — City Gate, Republic Street, the squares, Upper Barrakka — is level and paved, and can be done on wheels. Strait Street steps down the ridge, and the descent to Lower Barrakka involves steps whichever way you take it. Both can be skipped without losing the thread of the walk. The written guide is plain text and works with a screen reader; the audio needs no reading at all.
