The guide

Self-guided walking tours of Malta and Gozo: 45 stops across 4 tours, each with a written guide published free to read.

It runs entirely in your browser — no app to install, no account to create. Turn on location and it follows you through the city, offering each stop as you reach it. Download the audio first and the whole thing works with no signal at all: nothing to buffer while you are standing in front of something, and no data used while you walk.

Language

Translated scripts are being added. Untranslated languages are not offered rather than silently served in English.

How the narration is made

The words are written by a person. Every stop is researched and drafted by hand, then checked against published sources — dates, names, numbers and attributions — before it goes anywhere near a recording.

The voice is not a person. The narration is generated by a text-to-speech model (OpenAI's gpt-4o-mini-tts), because a synthetic voice can be corrected and re-recorded the same afternoon a mistake is found, and a booked studio session cannot. If that matters to you, it should be your call to make before you pay rather than a surprise afterwards.

Sound effects

A few seconds of scene-setting sound — cannon fire, a market, a bell — before certain stops begin. It plays once and then gets out of the way; turn it off if you would rather go straight to the guide.

Offline audio

Save all 45 stops (70 MB) so the tour works with no signal and no roaming charges.

Install it

On iPhone, tap the share button in Safari and choose Add to Home Screen. On Android, open the browser menu and choose Install app. The guide then opens full-screen and works offline.

Accuracy

Opening hours, ticket prices and firing times change. Everything marked Practical is a guide, not a guarantee — check with the site before planning your day around it. Corrections are welcome.
