Guide to St George's Basilica
St George's is known as the Golden Basilica — marble, gilding, a bronze canopy over the altar modelled on Bernini's in St Peter's. It is also one half of a three-hundred-year argument with the cathedral up in the Citadella, and that argument is the reason both churches are far grander than a town this size could otherwise justify.
Two parishes, one small town
Victoria has two: St George's here in the middle of the town, and the Cathedral of the Assumption on the rock above it. Three hundred years of competition lie between them — questions of precedence, of which holds the older claim to be Gozo's mother church, and of which parish throws the better feast and fields the louder band.
The rivalry extends to two band clubs, two sets of colours and two festas that between them dominate the summer. St George's falls in the third week of July, when the town turns red and the fireworks run for hours; Santa Marija in mid-August belongs to the Cathedral.
Why the rivalry built the ceiling
To a visitor this looks like a quarrel. On Gozo it functions as a structure — a way of organising loyalty, effort and money in a town of modest size.
Neither church would be decorated to this standard without the other. Go in: the basilica is free and nearly always open, and the contrast with the plainer cathedral above is the reason to see both.

Work back through the lanes towards the square, then take the road climbing north towards the citadel. The approach ramp is signposted. Stop at the gate in the wall.
