Guide to Vilhena Palace & the Standard Tower
Just inside the gate stand a round watchtower and a low French-looking palace, both finished in the mid-1720s and both part of the same rebuilding. The tower was once the hub of an island-wide alarm system; the palace was a Grand Master's escape from the smells of the harbour.
The Torre dello Standardo
Finished in 1725, the round tower did a job out of all proportion to its size. Malta lived in permanent expectation of a corsair raid, and when sails appeared, coastal watch towers lit fires and passed the alarm inland until it reached this high point in the middle of the island.
From here a standard went up and guns were fired, and every village knew within minutes. It was a communications network built entirely from lines of sight, and for two centuries it decided whether a village was warned or carried off.
Vilhena Palace
Mondion built the palace for Grand Master Manoel de Vilhena between 1726 and 1728. The proportions are horizontal, the courtyard shallow, the windows tall and shuttered: French baroque, and quite unlike anything in Valletta. Vilhena wanted a summer residence away from the harbour.
Its later life was less grand. It served as a hospital during a cholera outbreak, then as a tuberculosis sanatorium, then stood empty. It now holds Malta's National Museum of Natural History, an odd fate for a Grand Master's palace but one that keeps the doors open.
Why so much of Mdina is Georgian in date
In 1693 a catastrophic earthquake off eastern Sicily — the one that destroyed Catania and Noto — shook Malta hard. Mdina's medieval cathedral was wrecked and much of the city damaged.
Almost everything on this walk that looks confidently baroque is the rebuilding that followed.

- The palace’s French proportions beside Mdina’s much older, taller houses
